Summary[]
Michael becomes the target of a CIA task force after he’s accused of a crime at a local hotel. Meanwhile, senior officer Olivia Riley brings Sam in for questioning, and attempts to use him to find Michael’s whereabouts.
Synopsis[]
Previously on Burn Notice: Michael Westen's brother, Nate Westen is killed by an unknown sniper who's main target was Anson Fullerton. Michael's CIA mentor and former training officer, Tom Card shows him a picture of Nate's killer, Tyler Gray and sends him and his team to Panama on an off-the-books mission to capture him. Michael captures Gray and let's Card know before Card tells him to wait for backup, but Gray reveals that Card set this up as a suicide mission. Michael, Gray, Sam Axe, Fiona Glenanne, Jesse Porter and fellow CIA operative, Brady Pressman escape as an air-strike flies into Panama to ambush them. Brady sacrifices himself to save the team as Card tells someone, "Please tell me it’s done." As Michael and his team escape from Panama, Michael tells Gray that he's going after card, he'll need help and he'd have to wear a wire since Card would never suspect that he's working with the man who killed his brother. Back in Miami, as Gray goes to a meeting with Card, static crackles and it's revealed that Card has a frequency jammer. Card shoots Gray in the chest as Michael confronts Card at gunpoint. Card reminds Michael that Gray killed Anson and murdered Nate but Michael told Card that he ordered him to. Card tells Michael that they make calls and they know the ends justify the means. He also tells Michael that they could do great and necessary things and asks if they can move into the future. Michael initially lowers his gun and nods, but after Card put his gun away and said "I’m so proud of you son", Michael shoots Card in the head.
Picking up right where the previous episode left off, Michael stares at Gray and Card's dead bodies while still holding a gun in his hand. Sam finds him and sees that Gray and Card are dead. When Sam sees Card's gun in his holster, he's horrified and asks Michael what he did. Michael simply says that he did what he had to do, but Sam stops him and says that Card's gun was in his holster. Michael reminds Sam that Card killed his brother and was going to get away with it so he says he had no choice. Sam pins Michael against the wall, he angrily says that he was right outside that door and asks why didn’t he come and get him before he made that call. Sam answered his own question by saying that Michael knew that he would have something to say about it. They hear an elevator and Michael tells Sam that Card's team is coming so they got to go. Sam lets Michael go and says "This isn't finished." Michael says that they have to go out through the balcony so they drag a desk to block the door before they head out onto the balcony and go up to the next floor.
Once they get up there, Michael calls Fi who asks him what's going on. Fi tells him that the Hotel security is buzzing around like bees and there's a CIA caravan with two SUVs and a Command Van. When Fi asks Michael what happened, Michael tells her that Card's dead and they're coming for him. Fi asks why and Michael says he doesn't have time to explain but they need a way out and that they're up on the 9th floor. Fi says she's got it and she'll call him back. When Jesse asks what's going on, Fi tells him that those suits are after Michael and they need to find him a way out, so Jesse tells her to circle around the front and he'll check the east side.
Meanwhile, as Jesse checks out the east side for any ways out, Fi sees a heavy-hitting CIA agent named Olivia Riley stepping out of a caravan. Riley orders one of her men to get in contact with hotel security and orders another man to get in touch with the manager. Fi calls Michael back and tells him that there's a full tactical support team on-site and some heavy-hitter seems to be running the show. Michael tells Fi that he needs a door and to see if there's an exit they haven't covered, but Fi tells him that there isn't one and he's trapped.
Spy Facts[]
- Spies are trained to deal with catastrophic events. They're taught to separate how they feel, from what they need to do. But some circumstances are so extreme, that separation is impossible. Then, even a seasoned operative will have the same response as everyone else: horror, disbelief, shock.
- If you need to escape a building that's being locked down, speed is key. There's a small amount of time when the authorities coordinate their efforts. Intelligence operatives are trained to take advantage of that window. Of course, when the person in charge of locking down the building is also a trained intelligence operative, that window may get closed before you can use it.
- Once a location is completely locked down, the only thing hiding does is delay your capture. To get out, you need to generate action to keep security off balance and on the move. And the only way to do that is to come right out in the open.
- Once you get a security team moving, your best chance to escape is to move with them. If they don't know your face, you can hide in plain sight. If they DO know your face, you have to get a little more creative.
- If you need to escape a parking garage, the limited exit points can be a problem. Of course, with the right large-body, older-model car, you can create your own exit point.
- Making an escape in an urban environment is as much about precision as it is about power. You need a car that can make sharp turns and accelerate quickly. But even when you're in a fast car, if the numbers aren't in your favor, the focus has to change. From outrunning, to outsmarting.
- An R.F transmitter can broadcast audio up to 3 miles away. But a bug with that range needs a steady power source, like the wiring from the lamp above a license plate. It takes a little longer, but when you're trying to save a friend, it's time well spent.
- There's a reason spies try not to involve family in operations. The strain of waiting, worrying, and wondering can drive a trained operative to the brink, much less a civilian. And, of course, no matter how bad a situation is, it can always get worse.
- During an operation, you never want to make a move until everyone's on the same page. But sometimes you have no choice. When someone on your team gets a surprise, you have to hope they realize there's a plan in motion, and they can find a way to be part of it.
- The best place to rescue a prisoner in transit is at a choke point. A place where you can force the action into a narrow zone that you control. Well-timed, synchronized blasts on both sides of the choke point can separate the vehicles, isolate the person you're trying to retrieve, and create an effective barrier. And when you add covering fire, your opposition will worry more about staying alive, than stopping your escape.
- Once authorities have flagged a cellphone, they can access every relevant piece of information stored on the device.
- Thwarting a breach attempt typically involves meeting force with force, but if you want to buy yourself time without hurting anyone, you don't need firepower, you need a diversion. Without a blasting cap, C4 is really just flammable clay. Luckily, C4 doesn't have to explode to be useful. When your goal is to scare people without killing them, a flaming block of C4 stuffed with bullets will do just fine.
- A spy gets used to having enemies. It's just part of the job. But you never expect to be hated at home. When your own country thinks you're a traitor, everything changes. Allies become enemies, and the people who used to fight at your side, become the ones who want to hurt you the most.
